Wrexham U21s get win against Leicester in pre-season friendly

Wrexham U21 produced an impressive comeback to claim a thrilling 4–3 victory over Leicester City U21 in a chaotic and highly entertaining pre-season friendly.

Despite an early setback when Leicester opened the scoring inside four minutes, Wrexham quickly imposed themselves on the game, dominating possession and creating a steady stream of chances. The match swung decisively when Leicester midfielder Abdul Diallo was sent off in the sixth minute, allowing Wrexham to push higher and control proceedings.

After weathering Leicester’s second goal, Wrexham’s pressure finally told late in the first half as Luca Williams-Barnett curled home superbly to pull one back. Momentum fully shifted after the break, with Williams-Barnett striking again just seconds into the second half to level the scores at 2–2.

Leicester briefly regained the lead through Callum Redhead, but Wrexham responded with ruthless efficiency. Rio Owen calmly converted a penalty after another Leicester red card, and within a minute Alex Moore completed the turnaround by firing past the goalkeeper to put Wrexham 4–3 ahead.

Even after being reduced to ten men themselves late on, Wrexham held firm, with goalkeeper Elliott Jones and the back line repelling Leicester’s late pressure. Wrexham finished the stronger side, recording 17 shots and enjoying 61% possession, underlining their attacking dominance.

It was an encouraging display full of resilience and attacking quality, with Williams-Barnett’s brace and Owen’s all-round performance standing out as Wrexham showed character to overturn the odds and secure an eye-catching pre-season win.

U23s announce Lonmeni loan

Wrexham U23s have announced they have loaned Scofield Lonmeni from Liverpool for the season. The 17 year old defender is the second player from Merseyside to join the Wrexham academy after Luca Williams-Barnett joined from Everton and it is reflective of the strong links between the clubs, and the close distance between Wrexham and Merseyside.

Lonmeni is highly rated at Liverpool, and the club management hope that his time at Wrexham gives him some valuable experience as he develops his game.

One in One Out

Wrexham U21's have confirmed that Anthony Connolly has left the club and joined Bournemouth U21's in a deal that sees promising Ukrainian forward Kristian Shevchenko join the Wrexham U21's as well as a fee of £15,000,000.

Connolly, who scored twice under Mason at the end of last season, was deemed surplus to requirements within the Wrexham academy, with Rio Owen the preferred starting striker alongside George Feeney with Michael McSorley as backup. Shevchenko will be competing alongside Feeney and McSorely to compete with Owen for the starting place.

Whitehead joins U21s as 3 leave

Wrexham academy manager Phil Parkinson has confirmed the club have signed promising youngster Tommy Whitehead from Spurs with Nickolas Slosarczyk and Michael McSorley moving to in the other direction.

Whitehead is highly rated and is expected to become a key player in the Wrexham academy, and hopefully one day make the jump to senior football. Wrexham are sad to lose talented youngsters McSorley and Slosarczyk but wish them well in the future.

In other U21 news, Parkinson also confirmed that Norwich City have signed Harry McGlinchey for a fee of £40,000,000, with the defender moving to the Norfolk club on a 4 year contract.

Field manages 3 points with Owen on fire

Ryan Field managed a win and a loss in his brief stint as interim manager for Wrexham U21s during the managements absence. Rio Owen's 2 goals away to Southampton were not enough to avoid a 3-2 loss but Owen once again scored against Arsenal U21s with Umar Nawaz scoring late to give the visitors a valuable 3 points, 6 for the season, as the team look for promotion to the PL2.

Rio Owen has scored 5 goals in 3 games this season, and is in scintillating form for the U21s. Wrexham U21s next game is a home match against Will Schoolar's Manchester United U21s in the Premier League Cup Group Stage on Wednesday.
