Wrexham given tough Cwpan Y Dreigiau fixture draw

Wrexham have been drawn against Premier League giants Norwich City, Championship side Nottingham Forest and League One side Ipswich Town in this season's preseason Cwpan Y Dreigiau draw.

Wrexham start their campaign against Ipswich Town, in what is a practical unknown with Ipswich being a new team in the TDE leagues so could be a real challenge for the newly promoted Red Dragons to face.

The other 3 groups see Middlesbrough, Everton, Bournemouth and Sheffield United face each other, Leicester City, Swansea City, Hull and Sunderland with the last group consisting of Spurs, Lincoln, Newcastle and Bristol City.

Biggs saga takes new turn

The saga surrounding youth midfielder Lennon Biggs has taken yet another turn as it turns out he is indeed eligible for the U21 side and has been demoted back to the academy ahead of the start of the season. The poor boy will be feeling like a yoyo!

In other academy news, goalkeeeper Elliott Jones has joined the senior side to provide more capable backup to Gregor Kobel and is likely to be number 2 keeper ahead of Callum Burton and new signing Lawrence Vigouroux.

Dominguez named captain

Wrexham have confirmed that Argentinian defensive midfielder Nicolás Domínguez has been named captain of the Red Dragons ahead of their debut season in the Premier League.

The 28 year old takes the armband from Matheus Nunes who requested that it be taken from him as he felt that the added responsibility of being captain was affecting his game.

Domínguez was ever present for Wrexham last season, playing in 33 games, starting 10 times from the bench, and he contributed 3 goals and 3 assists. He scored in the 5-1 win over Brighton in round 4, The 3-1 win against Palace in round 16 and the 2-1 loss at Liverpool in the FA Cup. He managed assists against Forest, Brighton and Blackburn Rovers.

Wrexham to start campaign at home

Wrexham have been handed a home tie against giants Manchester United in the opening round of the Premier League season. The Red Devils will visit Y Cae Ras to take on the Red Dragons in what will be an almighty clash.

Wrexham have never faced Manchester United under Mason's management, but did have a visit to the Etihad Stadium last season to take on United's City rivals where they won 2-0 thanks to goals from Benjamin Sesko and Fabio Silva, so Mason will be hoping for more good performances against a Manchester side.

Former Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt is expected to make his debut against United, alongside academy graduate Rio Owen who has joined the first team this season. Another academy graduate, Isaac England, is also expected to make his club debut against the Red Devils.

When asked about the opening day fixture, Wrexham manager Daniel Mason told reporters;

"It will be a tough game. Manchester United are a well disciplined team but I am glad we have them at home and I hope that the home support can buoy us onto a good result in our debut Premier League match! We will need to get off to a good start and show the league that we deserve to be here!"
